Varicose Veins and Treatment
Varicose veins are those that have become swollen, stretched or distended, and most commonly involve the legs. Although they are generally benign, the presence of varicose veins can induce variable leg discomfort (including edema/swelling) and also be cosmetically undesirable to patients.
Varicose veins can be treated with leg elevation, compression stockings, and lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss and exercise. Varicose veins that develop during pregnancy typically resolve within 3 to 12 months without treatment. Symptomatic patients that fail conservative treatments and who have evidence of varicose veins or venous reflux disease, should consider being evaluated at the Toledo Vein Center to determine the most appropriate treatment plan.
The list below is by no means exhaustive of the treatments available, and does not rule out the possibility of non-surgical treatments including leg elevation, compression stockings and lifestyle modifications related to diet and exercise, all of which have been proven to have significant benefits for cardiovascular and vein health.

Treatment for Severe Varicose Veins
ClosureFast™ RFA System
In this procedure, which is called radiofrequency ablation, your physician will insert a thin tube (radiofrequency catheter) into an enlarged vein and heat the tip of the catheter using radiofrequency energy. This heat destroys the diseased vein by inducing it to collapse and subsequently close and is performed along the length of the diseased vein in a step-wise fashion. This is performed under local anesthesia using ultrasound guidance with minimal discomfort to the patient.

VenaSeal™ Closure System
The VenaSeal™ closure system is the only non-tumescent, non-thermal, non-sclerosant procedure that uses a proprietary medical adhesive delivered endovenously to close the vein. This unique approach eliminates the risk of nerve injury when treating the small saphenous vein, which is a risk sometimes associated with certain thermal-based procedures. Clinical studies have demonstrated that the procedure is safe and effective. The procedure is administered without the use of tumescent anesthesia, avoiding patient discomfort associated with multiple needle sticks.

Varithena™ (Polidocanol) Injectable Foam Therapy
We are happy to announce the addition of Varithena® to our treatment armamentarium in the management of Varicose veins, venous insufficiency and chronic venous disease. We have successfully treated multiple patients with Varithena® since September 26th 2018. This procedure is minimally invasive and involves injection of a non-compounded foam (Varithena®) to treat the diseased refluxing superficial vein and eliminate the reflux in that vein which results in significant improvement in symptoms and in severe cases help heal venous ulcers in addition to the cosmetic improvement in the appearance of varicose veins.

Ambulatory Microphlebectomy
In this procedure, your physician will remove tortuous varicose veins through a series of tiny skin incisions, approximately 1-2 millimeters in length. This procedure is performed using local anesthetic with minimal discomfort to the patient.
Sclerotherapy
In this procedure, your physician will inject small and medium-sized varicose veins with a solution that scars and subsequently closes those veins. In just a few weeks, treated varicose veins should fade. Some patients with extensive disease may require multiple treatments to ensure optimal results.
